Public speaking - Toastmasters' International

Written by David Johnson - APM Self-Employment Assistance Consultant, Business Owner, Distinguished Toastmaster (Toastmasters International)

The words "public speaking" don't have to make you cringe.

Public speaking sometimes figures highly on the list of things most people feel nervous or fearful of.

This can stem from a lack of confidence in themselves and/or the subject they are speaking about.

Public speaking is indeed a skill, and like all skills it can be learned.

Some people are naturally skilled at it, others have to work hard at it.

There is an organisation called, 'Toastmasters International' that can help you to improve your skills in public speaking, your general confidence and much, more.

This author has personal experience of the benefits, having been a committed member of Toastmasters International for the past 14 years.

Being confident at public speaking can assist you in a number of ways in business, for example:

  • Being able to speak confidently about your business to prospective customers and other business owners.
  • Speaking about your business at business networking events like a Chamber of Commerce.
  • Speaking at community organisations like Rotary, Lions, Probus or View Club.
  • Recording or speaking live on social media in relation to your business.
  • Speaking on your own or others' podcasts.
  • Live events with other business owners.

It doesn't matter whether you are an introvert or extrovert, either.

Both introverts and extroverts make great public speakers.

Remember, it is a skill and a vital one if you are running a business.
