Online newsletters are a great way to spotlight your business, introduce your staff and make some wider connections.
If you're thinking about setting up a newsletter for your business, there are some important things to consider before you go ahead.
As a business owner, think about the following before spending time and money on your newsletter:
- What is the purpose of your newsletter?
- What is target audience that it needs to reach?
- Why would you customers want to read it?
- Will it benefit them?
- What sort of things will it contain?
- Should you do it yourself or get it professionally done?
- What software will you need to send it?
- How will people subscribe to it?
- How much will it cost?
- How often will you send it?
Newsletter Content:
A newsletter can be a great way of informing your customers of:
- Your business' history
- Who are the people operating/working in the business
- Any changes in staffing
- Community involvement
- Upcoming events
- New products and/or services
- Any other items of interest relating to the business
- Guest articles by people who have the same customers as you but are not your competitors. These types of articles help build and strengthen your 'customer community'
Some further tips:
- Make sure your branding on the newsletter is consistent.
- Email newsletters are probably the most cost-effective way of distributing a newsletter.
- Keep it short and succinct. Some newsletters are way too long. If you need to keep scrolling multiple times, your reader will lose interest.
- As you are trying to keep the newsletter short, do not try and put 'everything listed above' in the one issue.
- Frequency: A good starting frequency is once a month. Emailing too often can overwhelm people and they can be more likely to unsubscribe.
